Social workers empower individuals and communities to overcome challenges. They work with all people, including members of vulnerable and oppressed populations, across the lifespan. The social work minor allows students to explore the social work profession, along with its six core values (service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence). Notably, the social work profession embraces diversity and difference, and is anchored in the principles of inclusion and equity.
The social work minor is perfectly suited for any student interested in advocating for social change, and positively impacting the lives of vulnerable individuals and the communities in which they live. As such, this minor is a great companion for individuals majoring in psychology, human services & addictions, criminal justice, sociology, and anthropology, to name just a few.
NOTE: This minor is not open to Social Work majors.
NOTE: A social work minor offers a strong introduction to the profession, but is not considered sufficient preparation for social work employment or competent social work practice. Only people with a Bachelor of Social Work or Master of Social Work degree may refer to themselves as social workers. Completing a social work minor will not make a student eligible for social work licensure in Kentucky (or in most states), nor will it make students eligible for the advanced standing MSW program.
