NKU’s STAR Program is an integrated humanities pathway through the university’s Foundation of Knowledge General Education Requirements. In it, students
- Study transformative works of literature, history, and philosophy,
- Think deeply, critically, and creatively about the ideas that they encounter,
- Apply what they learn to real-world dilemmas, issues, and questions, and
- Reflect on their learning to incorporate it into their perspective on the world.
The Transformational Thinking for Community and Career Certificate is a credential that recognizes students’ successful completion of 15 credit hours in STAR program sections of general education courses, all of which fulfill requirements students must complete. Students can identify qualifying sections by looking for the “S” suffix on the section of the course in which they enroll (ENG 101-001S, for example), and upon registering for the course, students will then be enrolled in a tracking course, STAR 000 STAR Learning for Community and Career (0 credits) . When a student has successfully completed five STAR sections, they will have accrued five STAR 000 tracking courses on their transcript, and if they are enrolled in the program, they will earn the Certificate.
The Transformational Thinking for Community and Career Certificate, which is especially beneficial for students in pre-professional majors such as STEM, health, or business, showcases to employers that students have completed a curriculum that emphasizes portable skills in writing, public speaking, and problem solving. In addition, completion of this certificate showcases students’ cultural knowledge, intercultural competencies, and creative thinking skills.
*All courses taken in both core and electives must have an S Suffix Following Section Number.
