Public Relations, B.A.

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Degrees, Minors, and Certificates

Students majoring in public relations will learn how strategic communication for clients significantly contributes to engagement with their stakeholders, developing skills that will prepare them for careers in fields such as social media management, event planning and promotions, and employee relations.

Depending on students’ areas of interest, they are encouraged to select a minor that will complement this major and strengthen their skill set.  For example, if a student has an interest in video production for strategic communication, a minor in Electronic Media and Broadcasting would be appropriate. Students majoring in public relations must complete 49 credit hours of study as outlined below, including “INF 100 Orientation to College of Informatics (1 credit) ” as well as “CMST 101 Public Speaking - OC (3 credits) ” or “CMST 101 Public Speaking - OC (3 credits) ” or “HNR 101 Introduction to Honors Learning - WC/OC (3 credits)  and HNR 102 Interdisciplinary Research Process - WC/OC (3 credits) ” for the oral communication requirement of their general education program and “JOU 110 Introduction to Mass Communication - SB (3 credits) ” toward the individual and society general education requirement) or EMB 100 Media Literacy (3 credit hours toward the culture and creativity general education requirement). It is the policy of the School of Media and Communication that the courses offered by the school (CMST, COM, DFX, EMB, HCOM, JOU, POP, PRE courses) cannot be double counted toward the majors and minors in the school unless the required course is the only option.

Special graduation requirements: All majors and minors must earn a letter grade of C- or better and a 2.0 GPA in their major or minor courses.
