Students majoring in communication studies will learn about human interaction across many contexts from interpersonal relationships to the workplace to public presentations, developing skills that will prepare them for careers in fields such as training and development, conflict mediation and sales. Depending on students’ areas of interest, they are encouraged to select a minor that will complement this major and strengthen their skill set. For example, if a student has an interest in video production related to public presentations, a minor in Electronic Media and Broadcasting would be appropriate
Students majoring in communication studies must complete 46 credit hours of study as outlined below, including “ INF 100 Orientation to College of Informatics (1 credit) ” as well as “ CMST 101 Public Speaking - OC (3 credits) ” or “ CMST 110 Introduction to Communication Studies - OC (3 credits) ” or “HNR 101 Introduction to Honors Learning - WC/OC (3 credits) and HNR 102 Interdisciplinary Research Process - WC/OC (3 credits) ” for the oral communication requirement of their general education program. It is the policy of the School of Media and Communication that the courses offered by the school (CMST, COM, DFX, EMB, HCOM, JOU, POP, PRE courses) cannot be double counted toward the majors and minors in the school unless the required course is the only option.
Special graduation requirements: All majors and minors must earn a letter grade of C- or better and a 2.0 GPA in their major or minor courses.
