Honors Capstone (6 hours)
Students complete a two to six credit hour, two semester Honors Capstone project during their last semesters. Capstone projects must be approved by the Honors College. Please refer to the Honors Capstone Handbook for more information.
Students complete the 0 credit hour HNR 381 Capstone Concept course usually during their third year to identify and plan the capstone project.
During the first semester of the actual project, students enroll in the 0 credit hour HNR 481 Capstone Development courses along with 1-3 credit hours of the corequisite HNR 482, HNR 483, or departmental capstone or senior project course.
During the second and final semester of capstone students enroll in the 0 credit hour HNR 491 Capstone Completion course along with 1-3 credit hours of the corequisite HNR 492 or departmental capstone or senior project course.
Students who complete a significant field placement or internship (for instance “student teaching” in teacher education or similar) for at least 6 credit hours in one semester, should take the HNR 381 Capstone Concept course and then finish the capstone project with the 0 credit hour HNR 496 Honors Capstone-Clinical with the field placement or internship as a corequisite.
Depending on the specific capstone pathway, the capstone project will total 2-12 credit hours combining the 0 credit hour tracking and repository course and the corequisite credit bearing honors or departmental project courses.
Credit Hour Requirement
Students must complete at least 18 credit hours of HNR or honors-eligible courses to complete the University Honors Scholar graduation distinction. Depending on specific pathway, students will complete between 18 and 24 credit hours in honors. As a variety of honors options might also count toward general education requirements or toward majors and minors, this does not mean that students must complete 18 to 24 credit hours in addition to minimum degree requirements.
Minimum GPA and Grade Requirements
Students must earn a minimum of a 3.0 overall NKU GPA, a 3.25 GPA in coursework counting toward the honors curriculum, and a minimum of a C- grade in each course counting toward the honors curriculum.
