NRP 660 Psychopharmacology Across the Lifespan (4 credits)Hours: 4 classroom + 0 lab/studio Prerequisite(s): Graduate Level adult Pharmacology course. Co-requisite(s): NRP 662 . Taught: Variable, check with department This didactic course will cover advanced psychopharmacology concepts, theories and issues building on the knowledge of general pharmacology, with an emphasis on the neurophysiological basis of psychiatric/mental health problems of individuals, ranging from childhood to geriatrics. Emphasis will be placed on the application of neuroscientific, neurobiological and genetic contemporary knowledge to psychopharmacological treatment strategies and their modification to improve patient care. The role of neuro-transmitters, receptors, brain circuits and their activity in the formation of symptoms will be incorporated, along with neuroanatomical, neurophysiological and neuropharmacological concepts. The effects and side effects of psychotropic medications used in the treatment of common psychiatric and mental illnesses across the life span will be discussed. Issues of prescribing and coordinating multiple medications and potential interactions will also be considered. ♦
